An indigenous cable company, MainOne, has begun the building of a $25m Tier III + data centre in Lagos. The Chief Executive Officer, MainOne, Ms. Funke Opeke, who unveiled the plan for the new data centre at a ground breaking ceremony at the company’s Cable Landing Station in Lagos on Wednesday, said the facility would be the largest of its kind in West Africa at 1,500 square metres with a 600 rack capacity.
Opeke said, “We are delighted with this project because of the immense benefits it will provide our customers. Internet penetration has been a huge issue in Nigeria, especially to the hinterlands.
“The new data centre will leverage on MainOne’s network, which is peered with leading operators and Internet exchanges worldwide to provide global reach to our customers across all locations.” SEE MORE AFTER CUT>>>>
The MainOne boss also stated that the data centre, when completed, would have redundancy such that there would be no single point of failure within the facility.
She added that the centre, located at Lekki, would pave the way for the establishment of additional data centres and points of presence across Nigeria and other West African nations.
Opeke put the cost of the data centre at $25m during a press briefing on the sidelines of the ground breaking ceremony.
The fibre cable company had recently received a $100m refinancing facility from Standard Chartered Bank and a consortium of other Nigerian banks to fund its infrastructure expansion, including fibre around the country, metro Lagos and nationwide POPs.
Opeke, on sealing the loan deal, had stated that it was part of MainOne’s growth strategy and vision to continue to deploy infrastructure required to make its services available and affordable to institutional customers across its markets.
She specifically said the company was building a three-tier data centre and also deploying an extensive fibre-optic network around Lagos.
She added that access to affordable broadband services would enable Nigeria and other countries in West Africa to continue to grow their economies at a faster pace.
The Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, MainOne, Mr. Folu Aderibigbe, who corroborated Opeke, said the project was a further proof of MainOne’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure within its primary markets.
