Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Warns: Make a Call While Driving and Go to Jail

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has announced a newly adopted strategy that would ensure that any person caught using the mobile phone while driving, would no longer be fined but immediately taken to court and jailed. Corp Marshal, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka said other offences like speed driving, dangerous overtaking and overloading would equally attract court action instead of the usual fines.

The FRSC boss, who was speaking at a news conference in Abuja, said these new measures are part of a newly launched campaign to reduce the increased spate of road crashes in the country. Commercial bus drivers are now expected to install speed limit devices in their vehicles so they henceforth should not exceed 100km per hour. Governor Rotimi Amaechi Prevented From Meeting Jonathan at Presidential Dinner for Security Reasons - Presidency

The Presidency on Thursday defended  the prevention of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State from exchanging pleasantries with President Goodluck Jonathan by a security operative during dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.It said the incident was purely a security issue that should not be politicized, especially by opposition political parties. The governor, who was sitting two tables away from the President, had risen to greet him but the security operative attached to the President stopped him halfway.  In order not to create a scene at the event that had nearly all his colleagues and two  heads of government (Joyce Banda of Malawi and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia) in attendance, Amaechi quietly returned to his seat and waited for  about five minutes before leaving the venue.

SWIFT Broadband Internet to Rollout 4G LTE in Nigeria

The wireless and fibre-based broadband provider is in the initial stages of rolling out the 4G LTE services starting with Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. The project will start in the next few weeks following company’s acquisition of the 4G business of Direct On PC and the issuance of technical upgrade contracts to a consortium of Huawei, IHS, Helios and others. The acquisition was financed by Union Bank and FCMB and sealed with the approval by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This deal will allow much higher bandwidth and use of applications on mobile devices with reduced service cost to already existing SWIFT customers. As part of the deal, SWIFT will inherit all the wireless 4G infrastructure with the addition of the existing customers of Direct On PC from Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt whilst Direct On PC will continue with uninterrupted services to their customers. Oprah Winfrey Tops Forbes' List For the World's Most powerful Celebrities

After two years as a runner-up, Oprah Winfrey was named the most powerful celebrity on Wednesday by Forbes, heading the six women and four men who make up the top 10.

It was the fifth time the former talk show host who runs her own TV network has headed the annual ranking of 100 celebrities. Singer Lady Gaga came in second, followed by director/producer Steven Spielberg and singers Beyonce and Madonna.

The World’s Largest Dish – Whole Camel Stuffed With Sheep Stuffed With Chicken Stuffed With Fish

Most people believe it to be just a myth, but Guinness Book of Records has the stuffed whole camel listed as the largest single food item on any menu, and there are even a few photos of Bedouins feasting on it doing the rounds on the internet.The official name of this traditional Bedouin dish is unknown, but most people refer to it as a “camel Turducken”. According to most sources it’s sometimes prepared at wedding feasts and special parties in Arab countries like Saudi Arabia. Basically, they get a full-grown camel, take out the insides and stuff it with a few sheep or lambs which are in turn stuffed with about 20 chickens full of fish. This calorie atomic bomb has to be boiled then cooked over a pit of burning charcoal until the camel meat is brown and crispy. I can’t imagine what the pot that can hold a whole camel looks like, but apparently the entire cooking process takes about 24 hours. The camel is then served on a silver platter and the wedding guests attack it with knives or their bare hands, leaving only the clean bones. Nigerians Would Pay £3, 000 to Enter United Kingdom (UK) As from November 2013

Nigerians are shocked to hear that, According to UK Daily Mail, visitors from 'high risk' countries in Africa and Asia will have to put up a £3,000 cash bond to enter Britain.
The money will be kept by the Government if visitors do not return home by the time their visas expire.
A pilot scheme, introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May, will target hundreds of people coming to Britain on six-month visit visas from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The countries have been picked for their high number of visa applications and what the Government sees as relatively high levels of immigration abuse and fraud, reports the Sunday Times.

The bonds, to be introduced from November, will only apply to non-EU migrants, otherwise they would fall foul of European rights to free movement. 
'This is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain,' Mrs May told the Sunday Times. BlackBerry From Airtel Offers Users One Month Free Subscription

Airtel Nigeria is offering its subscribers a one month free BlackBerry subscription when they pay for two months. This offer the company said allows BlackBerry users on the network to call, send texts, use BBM, WhatsApp and other services on their BlackBerry devices, and is the latest offer in a line of promotions by Nigerian operators since mobile number portability (MNP) was launched to increase competition among networks.

‘NIGERIA’ BOAT SINKS 10 DEAD, 20 MISSING

Ten people drowned and 20 remained unaccounted for after a boat carrying West African clandestine migrants sank off the coast of Gabon, the police said on Friday.The boat had left Nigeria and was within 15 minutes of arriving in Gabon’s capital, Libreville, when it went down late on Tuesday night.Gabonese authorities rescued 23 survivors and the search continued into Friday. “Last night, we had six bodies and since this morning we have found four more, which makes a total of 10 recovered bodies. The immigrants drowned,” said a member of the nautical brigade of Gabon’s national police, who asked not to be named. Police said the survivors – from Benin, Nigeria and Burkina Faso – claimed to have each paid the boat’s crew up to 500,000 CFA francs N160,000) to take them to Gabon where they hoped to find work. The Scrap Plane That causes Pandemonium in Lagos Belongs To Omotola Jalade's husband

A scrap plane formerly owned by the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries, Ajah, Lagos, caused panic in the city on Thursday as rumour spread that another aircraft had crashed in Lagos. It was learnt that the plane, which was recently released to Capt Matthew Ekeinde, husband of Nollywood star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, was being dragged to Badagry area of the state before its tyre burst. The incident forced the new owner to dump the plane in a nearby filling station. Hundreds of residents trooped out with their smart phones and camera, and queued behind the gate of Dapsey Oil filling station at Igando where the plane was parked.
A senior employee of the filling station said the plane, with registration number N972TF, was being towed from Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja to Badagry when one of the tyres burst. He said, “The plane was brought here around 2am after one of its tyres burst. It was being towed by a red vehicle, but after it got to Igando, they discovered it would be difficult to get it to its destination with burst tyre, which was why they brought it here.”

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in Nigeria Threatened with Stringent Service Conditions

 Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is currently affected by its nationwide acceptability, as subscribers continue to express discord over what they described as strict conditions of the service. The MNP, which is widely practiced world over by telecoms operators, allows subscribers to switch their mobile telephone numbers from one network to another, while still retaining the original number, irrespective of the network they switched to. The service was launched in Nigeria by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on April 22, 2013, but not without some strings attached to it, a situation that forced most subscribers to voice out the difficult experiences they encountered while attempting to port their numbers to another network of choice. investigation shows that Nigerians were not excited about the service, and they have attributed to slow response in porting, to the conditions attached to the service offering. World’s Oldest Person Jiroemon Kimura Dies at age 116 in Japan

Jiroemon Kimura, the world’s oldest person, has died at the age of 116. Kimura – who was born on 19 April 1897, when Queen Victoria was on the British throne – died of natural causes early on Wednesday, Japanese media said. The Kyoto prefecture resident became the oldest man in recorded history in late December 2012 at the age of 115 years and 253 days, following the death of Dina Manfredini, an Italian-American who lived in Iowa. The longest-living person in history was Jeanne Calment, a French woman who died in 1997 at the age of 122.Kimura died in hospital in his hometown of Kyotango, local government officials said. Big Brother Africa (BBA): Nigeria’s Melvin leads house in new task

This week the Housemates have a Task that they felt was confusing. In the Diamond House, Melvin had to read the details of the Task at least three times for his fellow Housemates to understand it.
Melvin led the bunch and suggested that they decide on a reasonable Wager. The Diamonds settled on 100 percent Wager yet again, in good faith that their presentation will be a success, like it was last week.
The Task: This week’s Task is an inter-house competition between the Diamonds, Rubies and Emeralds. Housemates will have to bake, write poetry and do artwork for their Presentation. The House that impresses Biggie will win the inter-house Task and their Wager. Biggie is not the only judge this week.
Once in the Diary Room, Melvin reported to Biggie that his team decided to Wager their all in an attempt to win as much back. The overall fear and curiosity is still the mystery of the Emerald House, the tough part being that they are competing against Housemates they don’t even know. Fatai Rolling Dollar passes on at 85

Such a sad news to report that Nigeria's oldest practicing musician, Pa Fatai Olayiwola Olagunju, popularly known as Fatai Rolling Dollar has passed on. He died this morning in a hospital in Lagos Island after a protracted illness. He was 85 year old (22nd July 1926 -12th June 12, 2013). May his soul rest in peace...amen. Pa Fatai Olayiwola Olagunju, popularly known as Fatai Rolling Dollar passed on at Marritol Hospital, Sam Sonibare Street in Surulere after a brief illness. One of his wives, Funmulayo Olagunju, confirmed his death. He was 85 year old.
He is survived by three wives, including a German and 16 children. May his soul rest in peace, amen
